Henrietta Rose has been a dear friend, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, colleague, loved by so many of us. She was also devoted to Sky Is The Limit Children’s Centre, located in Fort Portal, Western Uganda. Henrietta passed away peacefully on Sunday 24th June 2018.
Having been a VSO volunteer in Uganda, Henrietta always had an affinity with the country and its people. She first met the founder of the school, Rose Mugenyi, and her brother, Richard Tooro, in 2000. They became her dear friends and hosted Henrietta and her family almost every year. Tom stayed with Richard and his family several times and was welcomed at the Sky Is The Limit Primary School, where he gave the children an opportunity to learn from his excellent English. Henrietta was always grateful to them for their care and welcome to Tom.
Henrietta served as a valued and active member on the board of Ecologia Youth Trust for 13 years. Inspired by her passion for Sky Is The Limit, Ecologia has supported the centre since 2004. Under our umbrella, Henrietta raised thousands of pounds for Sky Is The Limit, to buy piglets and fruit trees for the farm, sink a well for fresh water, build a toilet block (in an innovative fund-raising venture, Henrietta sold loo rolls by the dozen!), and buy classroom furniture and a new truck to transport the children to school. You can see the incredible impact Henrietta had on all the staff and students at Sky Is The Limit by the kind words they have said in her memory.
Ecologia was always proud to play a part in this effort, and to witness the extraordinary results – not least of which included seeing children who had to walk 12 miles to school on an empty stomach becoming bright and energetic, stronger and healthier, after eating a daily nutritious school meal, provided with our help.
In memory of Henrietta Rose, we have set up a Memorial Fund for Sky Is The Limit.
We aim to rebuild the classroom destroyed by termites last year into a permanent brick structure that will stand the test of time. This will be a testament to Henrietta’s love and dedication to this small but important school in Uganda. We aim to raise £25,000 for the school and invite you to contribute in any way you can, to keep the momentum of support for Sky Is The Limit going in her memory.
About Sky Is The Limit
Sky Is The Limit is located in one of the country’s poorest regions, where research has shown that nearly half of its children have never been to school. 35% of Uganda’s population live in poverty and 2.5 million children are orphans. 1.2 million of these orphans have lost parents due to HIV/AIDS. Sky Is The Limit aims to give all of its students a well-rounded, holistic education, which includes lessons in music, dance and sport, plus training in skills that can provide future employment, such as tailoring, carpentry, and farming (provided at the school’s own organic farm).
Without Sky Is The Limit, the children it supports would not be able to attend school because parents are required to pay for their children’s school uniforms and educational materials. The children come from families who are so impoverished they are struggling to feed their children, and as a result their children become excluded from the state education system. In addition, several of the children are known to be living with HIV/AIDS, many have lost one or both parents to the disease, and all have been adversely affected in some way by the wider impact of the pandemic on their communities.
There are many ways you can support Sky Is The Limit. See what your donations can help achieve here.
Let’s make this an unforgettable Memorial Fund in Henrietta’s name!
