At International Peace Initiatives (IPI), our volunteer programme is growing steadily. Three volunteers will visit this year, to share skills and learn how to develop lasting solutions to the challenges facing IPI’s young people.
Ecologia partners with local organisations like IPI because we know that new technology and ways of doing things need to be ‘owned’ by local people to be truly sustainable. Kilian Bartsch (20), a volunteer at IPI, quickly understood this.
I noticed that many projects had been implemented for a short duration, only to be left abandoned. I decided to build on what others had begun, by fixing IPI’s solar system and getting its biogas tank running.
After ‘Google-ing’ biogas tanks, Kilian learned how to use dung from IPI’s cows to produce cheap fuel for the kitchen. The locals thought he was a ‘biogas expert’ until he explained how the tank works. They soon grasped its usefulness, and two older boys are now able to maintain the tank.
If you’d like to volunteer at IPI, we’d love to hear from you!
Volunteers like Kilian add so much value to IPI. Thank you Ecologia for connecting us to a wonderful young man! – Anne Makandi, Director, IPI
