Growing Livelihoods: Supporting Education for Ugandan Children

10 August 2015 Leave a Comment

Last month Ecologia received funding from the Gilchrist Trust to buy more school equipment and furniture for our Ugandan partner, Sky is the Limit Centre and School.

For many of the 360 children Sky Is The Limit Centre supports, the centre provides a lifeline to opportunities they would not otherwise experience – food, education and medical care. Founded by Rose Kabasinguzi Mugenyi, a local healthworker, the children receive everything they need to grow up healthy and well.

For Connie Rose, Sky is the Limit changed her life. Connie was one of 9 children and orphaned at 4 years old when both her parents died within three months of each other. The 9 children stayed together living in the family home, with older children doing their best to care for younger children, like Connie. In reality this meant the young children went hungry and missed out on school whilst older children often engaged in unsafe or illegal working practices in an effort to care for their siblings.

Connie RoseLuckily for Connie and her sisters, Rose Mugenyi was travelling in her area and heard about the family. The children moved to Fort Portal where they were adopted by a friend of Rose. Connie started school and did very well – always coming in near the top of the class. She went on to the Vocational Institute and studied Art and Design, spending her holidays at Sky is the Limit’s vocational training centre – The Chosen Few. Having graduated Connie now manages The Chosen Few Tailoring Centre and passes on her skills and experience to other young Ugandans who are learning new skills to create new lives.

I feel very happy and am so proud of Sky is the Limit Children’s Centre…LONG LIVE SKY IS THE LIMIT COMMUNITY!
