Promoting Human Rights, Good Governance & Mutual AccountabilityIn 2007 Ecologia Youth Trust embarked on a new partnership with Thai NGO Sathirakoses-Nagapradeepa Foundation (SNF). Supported by the
Big Lottery Fund our first 3-year project from February 2008-January 2011 restored livelihoods and empowered devastated communities of traumatised and marginalised migrant workers and their families devastated by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami in Southern Thailand.
We are proud to announce that our second 3-year project promoting the human and workers rights of Burmese migrants in South Thailand has begun. The Big Lottery Fund is again generously funding the £500,000 project that builds on the success of the previous Peacebuilding project.
Peacebuilding between nations Our new project will focus on improving relations between the Thai and Burmese people through leadership training, community activities, joint activities for women and youth, and working to include migrant workers in Thai labour associations.
The primary beneficiaries are 50,000 migrant workers from Burma who live in Southern Thailand, with an additional 450,000 people indirectly benefitting from the project by gaining more rights and entitlements. SNF is a Thai based NGO with decades of experience and Ecologia is delighted to be working with them again.
Project Plans Year 1: The focus is on building relationships between Burmese workers, local officials, employers and the Thai community. There will be human rights training and awareness raising on labour issues.
Year 2: In the second year, migrant worker labour associations will be launched, leadership training provided for community leaders and active peace building events will strengthen ties between communities.
Year 3: In the final year pilot legal clinics will be established, migrant worker labour associations will receive endorsement from the Thai trade unions, and a comprehensive plan to develop workers unions will be in place.
